CV Writing Tips For Graduates

If you are looking to secure your first professional job and are still at university it can be hard to know what to include and what not to include.

With that in mind, we thought it worthwhile providing an overview of what hiring managers will be looking for from a graduate.

Previous working experience of any kind.

Hiring managers just want to see that you have worked in some capacity in the past.

Obviously if you have professional experience, working in an office environment then include this.

If your professional experience is limited to hospitality you do want to include this as it shows that you have at least worked before and that you will likely have had some experience dealing with customers and managers.

Interests

Most businesses are looking for people who are well rounded, this means they want people who have interests outside of work.

If you have played competitive sport it shows that you are likely to understand the benefits of working with others.

If you play an instrument it shows that you are likely to have enough patience to master a technical skill.

Any experience working on committees shows that you should be able to organise things.

Academic Performance

Academic performance is more important for some jobs than others.

Highly technical roles will want to see excellent academic performance however most businesses will make a decision based on the number of fails you had at uni.

If it is not remarkable, do not draw attention to it.

A credit average is not remarkable.

Make sure your CV is relevant to the positions you are applying for. If you are applying for graduate accounting or legal roles then you want your CV to be clear, concise and to the point.

Overall when hiring graduates businesses want to be confident you will give it the time you need to be successful.
